That isn't a historical accident or a holdout. It is a choice that the District's council has reaffirmed in resolution after resolution, most recently in January 2026, recognizing the District's role in protecting the natural environment, supporting agricultural lands and local food systems.
The peninsula has working farms because we kept the rules that let them work. We have a forest canopy and a coastline because the Official Community Plan still says we should. We have a regional green belt because we, and Metchosin, agreed to be one. None of this is permanent unless we keep choosing it.
